You are finally out of your parents' house living on your own or with flat mates. You did it. Somehow, though, the responsibilities, pressures, and let's be honest, nagging never seem to cease. When are you going to get married? When are you going to have children? And the list goes on. Perhaps some or none of these questions even pertain to the life you are envisioning for yourself (or are already building) and you simply don't know what to do with them.
You just want to live YOUR life.
Why can't they see how much you have built for yourself? How much more joy this is bringing you? That you don't have to be like them or live up to their expectations to live a good life?
You realize that your parents (and family in general) care about you and just want what is best for you...but, they just don't get it. You've tried to make them understand but you are either met with blank stares or they double down on the pressure.
This is not a unique experience.
There are answers. There are ways to navigate this situation to increase joy and minimize stress and anxiety. This resiliency is quite difficult to access on your own, however…you have been trying without much luck.
If this resonates with you, it might be time to reach out for some support as you navigate these challenges. It also might be nice to not have to explain every little detail to someone as they will already understand what you are living with. Conversely, if you need to let it spill out that can also be a very freeing experience. Either way, you are not on your own.
Reach out and get moving in the direction that you want to. It doesn't have to feel this way forever.
